I'm dead sick of the popularity contest, and see no reason whatsoever to perpetuate it. We're adults here, or lie and say we are. We should be above that and capable of much more.

Why not try to get more people involved or interested in participating by offering more than one winning position, like say, 3, or maybe even 5? 

People are a lot more likely to want to be part of something like a contest if they have a better chance of actually being some sort of winner. It won't hurt anyone to hand out more than just one top prize, and it might draw more people in. 

People are more likely to bond in a circumstance like that, too, rather than the standard, traditional black-and-white competition being revamped and repeated ad nauseum (seemingly featuring the same old cliquey crap that alienates the community rather than interests the members here.)

The status quo with these rampant contests is not as functional as it could or should be. It's the same old thing, again and again, with the same faces/names reappearing all over. Perhaps it's time to try making a few changes and see what kind of response it gets.
